Volcano: An Inquiry into the Life and Death of Malcolm Lowry (1976) is an Oscar-nominated National Film Board of Canada documentary directed by Donald Brittain and John Kramer. He won the Governor General's Award for English-language fiction in 1961.

They lived and wrote in a squatter's shack on the beach near the community of Maplewood in Dollarton, British Columbia, north of Vancouver. They moved to Vancouver, British Columbia where they married in 1940. He was deported from Mexico and moved to Los Angeles where he met his second wife, the actress and writer Margerie Bonner. His wife, Jan joined him in Mexico but their marriage ended in late 1937. Plagued by alcoholism and mental health issues, he moved to New York City and then Mexico while beginning work on his novel, Under the Volcano. He married his first wife, Jan Gabrial in France in 1934. In 1911, the Lowry household in Liscard, Cheshire consisted of: Arthur Osborne Lowry (41), Evelyn Lowry (37), Arthur Russell Lowry (5), Clarence Malcolm Lowry (1) plus a nurse and a servant his father was a cotton broker. Malcolm was born in 1909, son of Evelyn Boden and Arthur Lowry. Malcolm was English poet and novelist best known for his 1947 novel Under the Volcano, which is considered one of the great works of the 20th century (number 11 on the Modern Library's 100 Best Novels of the 20th century).
